Lola Young - Messy

For a job application, Studio Island asked me to design a t-shirt for one of their artists, Lola Young. Her debut album ‘This Wasn't Meant for You Anyway’ wasn’t released that long ago, and the song that I had to design the garment for was ‘Messy’. Of course, I didn’t know it at the time, but eventually this song was about to become a worldwide hit.
The requirements for the design were that the existing visual style of the album and the music video had to be taken into account. I came up with a couple of designs and landed on these two because I liked them both equally.
One of my favorite details is the picture frame on the back of the white shirt. This has a recess in the top left corner. This refers to the shape of the room in the music video. There you can see a recess in the room in the far left. So you can see the shape of the frame as a top-down view of the room. And it worked well with the picture because Lola is standing on the left side, so that extra piece of room made space for that.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t the chosen candidate for the job, but in consultation I received permission to share this project.
